Project Overview

This was a fictional challenge to redesign part of an existing Trailhead module and add at least one element of interactivity to enhance the learner experience. Please note: all information from this challenge is PUBLIC and belongs to Salesforce.

My role was to design and develop a remodeled version of the Sales Cloud Basics module from the Salesforce Trailhead learning platform. I also used this challenge as an opportunity to practice using a new learning management system so once I completed the redesign, I uploaded it to TalentLMS.

Design

My approach for redesigning the module was simple:

  1. Create balance by using white space and a pop of color without sacrificing consistency in the design.

  2. Add one element of interactivity. The module was short and already had 2 videos. Adding multiple interactive elements would be too distracting for the learner.

  3. Scaffold the information by breaking it into chunks. The information itself is not difficult to process BUT the original layout is text heavy. Presenting too much text at once can be overwhelming from a learner’s perspective.

I decided to use Genial.ly to complete the remodel. Genial.ly is an inexpensive alternative presentation and design platform that offers plenty of visual and interactive elements which can be used to enhance the learning experience.

Since asynchronous learning frequently takes place on a learning management system, I decided to deploy the newly redesigned lesson on TalentLMS.

This LMS has gamification features, similar to the features you see on the original Trailhead module. This way, I would be able to keep a level of consistency in design with the knowledge check questions at the end.

It’s also good to note that you can easily update content in real time if you embed your Genial.ly presentation into an LMS (just copy and paste the iframe).

Development

I want to note once again that I did not change the content. Instead, I simply found ways to present the information in a more digestible format. I separated the information into scaffolded chunks and highlighted the main idea of the slides to let it stand out. I also made sure to allow for extra white space on each slide to make it less overwhelming for the learner to read the information.

Part 3 of the Sales Cloud Basics module covers the dashboard software that Sales Reps use. For my element of interactivity, I found a replica of the dashboard online and recreated the dashboard with an added hotspot feature to create a learner-driven experience. I also wanted to veer away from using traditional bullet points so I presented them in a non-traditional way with a background unique to the company.

My final step was to ensure the gamification elements were included in the LMS portion of the redesign. I set a progress bar for the lesson and changed the settings for the course to allow users to gain points for completing the lesson and for answering questions correctly. Lastly, I created a customized digital badge in TalentLMS that learners could earn upon completion of the module.

Feedback

I presented the new layout to the project stakeholders. They liked my redesign and were satisfied with both my design process and the explanation of my design decisions.
