Overview
Compliance training is a critical requirement for the workforce at Global Medical Response, which includes emergency medical personnel who often complete training while working in the field.
Because employees frequently access training between calls or during downtime, courses needed to be easy to complete on mobile devices and designed to respect the time constraints of field-based staff.
Business Problem
Several existing compliance courses had become difficult for employees to complete efficiently. Many courses were:
Lengthy and time-consuming
Not optimized for mobile access
Repetitive for experienced professionals
These challenges created frustration for learners and reduced engagement with required training.
My Process & Analysis
I reviewed existing training modules and analyzed how employees interacted with the courses. During this evaluation, I identified three key issues:
Information overload, which made courses longer than necessary
Cognitive overload, making it harder for learners to retain the most important information
Redundant content, especially for experienced professionals who were already familiar with the material
These issues were especially challenging for field-based employees who needed to complete training quickly and often relied on mobile devices.
Solution & Tools
I redesigned several compliance courses to improve usability, accessibility, and efficiency for field-based learners. The goal was to make compliance training more efficient while still ensuring that critical information was clearly communicated with limited time constraints.
Key improvements included:
Breaking large courses into smaller, more digestible modules to reduce cognitive load
Using Articulate Rise to create mobile-friendly courses with a consistent layout and user experience
Introducing interactive assessments and scenario-based elements using Articulate Storyline
Adding a test-out assessment option for experienced professionals in the HIPAA training program, which allowed knowledgeable employees to demonstrate competency without repeating unnecessary content
To manage multiple course redesigns and keep the project on schedule, I used Microsoft Project to track development tasks, course timelines, and dependencies. This helped prioritize which courses needed to be developed first and provided stakeholders with visibility into project progress and upcoming milestones.
Impact
The redesigned courses improved the overall training experience for employees, especially those working in the field. Results included:
Reduced time spent on redundant training
Easier course completion on mobile devices
A more streamlined and user-friendly learning experience
The redesigned HIPAA training was a huge hit received positive feedback from employees, who reported that the updated course made required compliance training more manageable and efficient.
